Halloween Paddle Boarding 2026: Where to Join a Costume Paddle & What to Bring
Halloween on the Water · 2026
What if your Halloween costume came with a paddle instead of a broomstick?
Every October, witches, wizards, pirates, skeletons, and even costumed dogs show up on lakes and rivers across the country. Some join organized costume paddles. Others decorate their boards, grab a few friends, and make their own Halloween plans on the water.
Looking for a costume paddle near you? Here are five U.S. events for 2026, along with ideas for what to wear, what to pack, and how to decorate your board without getting in the way of your paddle.
Halloween Paddle Boarding Events to Check Out in 2026
Join other costumed paddlers at one of these gatherings. All times are local to the event location. Check the organizer's latest announcement before traveling, as weather, water conditions, and event arrangements can change.

If floating through downtown dressed as a witch sounds like your kind of Saturday, start with Petaluma.
Witches & Wizards on the Water brings costumed paddlers to the Petaluma River for a Halloween celebration. Bring a few friends and make the costumes part of your afternoon on the water.
Good to know: Bring your own paddle board or check rental availability with The Floathouse before you arrive.

Niphean × Desert Paddleboards · Event Partnership
🌙2. Witches Regatta · Tempe, Arizona
October 24, 2026 · 4 PM gathering
We’re teaming up with Desert Paddleboards for the Witches Regatta at Tempe Town Lake, with a community paddle and joint online promotion.
In the Tempe area? Grab a paddling friend, put together a comfortable witch costume, and join the gathering on October 24. Expect witch hats, decorated boards, and time on the water with other local paddlers, rather than a race.
Good to know: The gathering is free to join, but paddlers need to arrange the required city lake permit. Bring your own board or check rental options with Desert Paddleboards in advance.
Location: Tempe Town Lake Marina, Tempe, AZ.
Check Desert Paddleboards' latest announcement for meeting details, permit guidance, and any updates before heading out.
🐾3. Witches Paddle with SUP Pups · San Diego, California
October 18, 2026 · 4 PM
SUP Pups' Halloween gathering at Liberty Station gives dog-loving paddlers a reason to bring their paddling partners along for the celebration.
If you already paddle with your dog, this is one to check out. You can also ask the organizer about joining without a pet.
Good to know: Confirm participant requirements, dog policies, registration, rental availability, and the exact meeting point before making plans.
Location: Liberty Station, San Diego, CA.
👻4. Halloween Costume Parade Paddle · Wekiva Island, Florida
October 31, 2026 · 10:30 AM–noon
Wekiva Island's Halloween Costume Parade Paddle combines a group river paddle with a costume competition.
Categories include Best Costume, Most Creative Costume, and Best Group Theme. If you're going with friends or family, pick a theme together before packing your boards.
Good to know: Participation is free when bringing your own board. Rental options are available; check reservation and prepayment requirements beforehand.
Location: Wekiva Island, Longwood, FL.
🦇5. Witches Paddle · Keystone State Park, Pennsylvania
October 31, 2026 · 11 AM–1 PM
Keystone State Park is hosting a Witches Paddle on Halloween. Dress up, bring your own suitable watercraft, and join the group on the lake.
The event also collects nonperishable food donations for local food banks.
Good to know: Previous paddling experience is recommended, and life jackets are required. Registration is required for those requesting a limited rental paddle board, but not for participants bringing their own craft.
Location: Beach Boat Launch, Keystone State Park, PA.
Nothing nearby? A short paddle with a few friends can be just as much fun.
What Should You Wear for a Halloween Paddle?
A costume that works on land isn't always comfortable on a paddle board. You still need to bend your knees, rotate your torso, move your paddle freely, and see where you're going.
Start with a few simple pieces that suit the conditions.
🧹The Classic Witch
Start with a black athletic top and quick-drying leggings, then add a lightweight witch hat that stays out of your line of sight.
You get the Halloween look without trying to paddle in a floor-length robe.
🏴☠️The Pirate
A striped shirt, quick-drying shorts or pants, and a bandana make the costume easy to recognize.
Skip bulky props, oversized hats, and anything that could snag on your gear or fall into the water.
💀The Skeleton
A skeleton-print athletic top or one-piece outfit gives you a recognizable costume without much bulk or loose fabric.
🎭Going as a Group?
Pick one theme and keep it simple. Matching colors or prints can bring the group together without making anyone uncomfortable on the board.
Whatever you choose, avoid long capes, trailing fabric, loose masks, or accessories that could interfere with your paddle or other equipment.
Wear a properly fitted life jacket, and make sure your costume doesn't affect its fit or function.
Bringing Your Dog?
Your dog doesn't need an elaborate costume either. A Halloween bandana or another lightweight, comfortable accessory can be enough. Avoid anything that restricts movement, causes stress, or interferes with a properly fitted pet life jacket.
If your dog isn't enjoying the costume, skip it. A comfortable paddling partner matters more than the photo.
Dress for the Water, Not Just the Photos
October in Florida can feel very different from October in Pennsylvania. Check both water and air temperatures before deciding what to wear.
Quick-drying layers are generally more practical than cotton, while colder water may call for suitable thermal protection, such as a wetsuit or drysuit.
Choose clothing for the conditions first, then add costume details that don't interfere with it.
Halloween Paddle Boarding Checklist
Pack your usual paddling essentials before adding the Halloween props.
| Bring | Why |
|---|---|
| Paddle board and paddle | Unless you've already reserved a rental |
| Properly fitted life jacket | Wear one suited to the activity and follow event and local requirements |
| Appropriate leash | Match it to the paddling environment and organizer guidance |
| Dry bag | Keep spare layers and small belongings protected from splashes |
| Waterproof phone pouch | Keep your phone protected and accessible, including for costume photos |
| Water-friendly footwear | Helpful around docks and launch areas |
| Drinking water | Costume or not, you're still paddling |
| Towel and dry clothes | Useful for changing after your paddle |
| Costume accessories | Keep them lightweight, secure, and clear of your equipment |
If you're bringing your own inflatable SUP, check its condition before leaving home. At the launch, confirm the pressure matches your model's instructions and the fins are correctly installed.
Arrive early enough to set up your board, adjust your costume, and get comfortable before the group heads onto the water.
How to Decorate Your Paddle Board for Halloween
Match a few details to your costume rather than covering the whole board. A small decorative flag or lightweight removable details may be enough, provided they're secure and don't create a snagging hazard.

For costume photos and decoration inspiration only. Remove loose fabric, hanging props, and faux cobwebs before launching, and keep your deck and equipment clear.

No Halloween Paddle Near You? Plan Your Own
Grab two or three paddling friends, choose a familiar location with suitable conditions and a permitted launch, and plan a short route.
Agree on a theme if you like. Bring a few snacks for afterward, and take a group photo before launching.
You could even choose your own costume categories:
- Best Witch or Wizard
- Funniest Costume
- Best Group Theme
- Most Creative Board Decoration
- Best-Dressed Paddle Pup
Keep it simple: a short paddle, people you like, and something to eat back on shore.
Before You Launch
Check the weather, water temperature, local rules, and event information before heading out. Make sure your costume doesn't restrict your movement or interfere with your equipment.
If conditions don't match your experience or setup, stay on shore and enjoy the event from there. You can still meet other paddlers and take your costume photos.
